The 74th Annual Congress of the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Greetings

I am pleased to announce that the 74th Annual Congress of the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (JSOG) will be held at the Fukuoka International Congress Center for three days from August 5 (Friday) to 7 (Sunday), 2022. The dates of the Annual Congress have been shifted to August due to availability of the venue; we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

This is the first time in 19 years for the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Kyushu University to host the Annual Congress of JSOG, following the 30th Annual Congress chaired by Professor Ichiro Taki and the 55th Annual Congress chaired by Professor Hitoo Nakano, who were respectively the seventh and the eighth professors of our department.

In the field of obstetrics and gynecology, we face an urgent need to address the uneven regional distribution of physicians and the lack of support to help female physicians continue working after giving birth. From a scientific viewpoint, the progress of molecular biological techniques has allowed molecular-targeting drugs and genome-wide association study to be used for clinical purposes. As a result, there is an urgent need to develop ethical guidelines for the handling of private and genetic information. Meanwhile, the Covid-19 pandemic poses an additional challenge to medical professionals. Taking all these factors into consideration, I believe “adaptation to diversity” is the key to meeting these critical needs. We must also consider how to safely organize an international meeting during the pandemic.

The theme we have chosen for the 74th Annual Congress of JSOG is “Beyond diversity and space,” which represents our desire to co-create a new dimension in obstetrics and gynecology from diverse perspectives to open up the future together.
The program of the forthcoming Annual Congress includes two symposiums to discuss basic research and clinical application of its results that underlie recent medical progress. The themes of these symposiums are: “Elucidation of the molecular mechanism of the occurrence and progression of gynecological cancer for the development of new diagnosis and treatment methods” (oncology), and “Basic and clinical elucidation and treatment strategies of the pathological condition of the fetus and placental function associated with prognosis” (perinatology and genesiology). With distinguished researchers serving as the speakers of these symposiums, heated discussions are expected.

Invited lecturers include Mr. Toshihiko Aoyagi, President of Kyushu Railway Company, who will speak about the Kyushu Shinkansen and the “Seven Stars in Kyushu” train, as well as measures taken by his company against the current pandemic. Dr. Yasuko Yamamura, who has been leading the Program to Support the Research Activities of Female Researchers of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) as Program Officer, will discuss the topic of gender equality. This is one of the most important issues in the field of obstetrics and gynecology and we look forward to learning from her insights. From overseas, we will invite, as lecturers, Dr. Channing Der, Professor of the University of North Carolina and a leading authority on the development of RAS-targeting drugs, and Dr. Jeanne Conry, President-elect of FIGO, as well as physicians representing each of the subspecialty areas recommended by the Program Committee members. As a Presidential Session, one full day will be allocated to a session hosted by the Asia and Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (AOFOG), in which the three successive AOFOG presidents serving terms from 2015 to 2022 will deliver lectures, and two committees will hold symposiums. We hope this will increase recognition of the activities of AOFOG among young physicians.

Fukuoka City, the venue of the 74th Annual Congress of JSOG, has prospered as a center of international exchanges since ancient times, and offers excellent access with Fukuoka Airport for international flights and Hakata Station, a gateway to Kyushu. The Fukuoka International Congress Center faces Hakata Bay which has an international trade port. Here, you can enjoy fine views of the Genkainada Strait with the sight of ships constantly entering and leaving, as well as Shikanoshima Island, which is famed as the place where the Gold Seal of the ancient kingdom of Na was discovered. I hope participants will feel the energy and vibrancy of not only Fukuoka Prefecture, but also the entire Kyushu region. We expect the Covid-19 crisis will be over by the time the Annual Congress is held, but even if this is not the case, we will take all possible measures to ensure your safety.
