The Asian Society of Paediatric Anaesthetists (ASPA) was first mooted in the year 1999, by members of the Department of Paediatric Anaesthesia, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital Singapore. The society was formally registered in 1999 in Singapore, and the inaugural ASPA conference was held in Singapore in 2000.

20 years on, it gives me great pride to be able to bring the conference back to Singapore, from November 13-14, 2021.

For 20 years, ASPA has aimed to serve the needs of all paediatric anaesthetists interested in advancing the art and science of anaesthesia for children, through our annual conferences, workshops and webinars.

The original intention of forming a specifically “Asian” society was to highlight needs and issues that are peculiar to Asia. We also wanted to give our Asian colleagues a platform to share ideas, techniques and experiences. Even with that intent, our membership has always been international, attracting members from countries as far as the USA to Korea to Turkey. Such was the reach of paediatric anaesthesia!

The theme for this year's conference is "Navigating new frontiers to improve paediatric anaesthesia outcomes in Asia". We hope to bring to our participants fresh insights about the latest development in state-of-the-art practices, as well as stimulating discussions about foundational pillars for achieving improvement in outcomes that truly matters. We have prepared an exciting program with international and local speakers and panellists, across a range of interesting topics from brain monitoring to quality improvement.

This year, due to the pandemic, the conference will be virtual. We believe that this will bring new opportunities for us to collaborate with a wider fraternity, as well as to reach a larger audience.
