Welcome Greeting

During this unprecedented crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, I feel sincere compassion for all of you who are working hard on the front lines of health care, striving to bring this situation to a resolution as quickly as possible. The 84th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society has been postponed to July 31, and although it is still some time away, we have launched the website for the 85th Annual Scientific Meeting as it will be held in the usual month of March.

My name is Yoshihiko Saito, and I work in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Nara Medical University. In an honor greater than I deserve, I have been assigned to chair the 85th Annual Scientific Meeting. Together with all hospital staff, we are doing our best preparing for the success of the meeting.

The 85th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society will be held at PACIFICO Yokohama on March 26–28, 2021. It will be held in conjunction with the World Congress of Cardiology 2021 (WCC2021), which is being chaired by Professor Keiichi Fukuda of the Department of Cardiology at the Keio University School of Medicine. With our Japanese Circulation Society (JCS) currently promoting greater internationalization, I see it as immensely significant that the 85th Annual Scientific Meeting and the WCC2021 are to be held jointly. Together with Professor Fukuda, we are putting together a diverse program based on the catchword “Make the meeting memorable!”

Coinciding with the start of the new Reiwa era in Japan, cardiology is entering a time of great change, as is medicine and society in general. In medical research, there has been remarkable innovation, including in iPS cells, genome editing, whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, big data and artificial intelligence. Research methods used in cardiovascular medicine and surgery have also changed dramatically. In addition, on the front line of cardiovascular medicine, latest technologies such as TAVI, catheter intervention and ablation, and implantable devices have been applied in the clinical setting, and cardiac regenerative medicine too has all but progressed to actual clinical practice.

In this context, it is time to reconsider the essential roles of the JCS in cardiovascular medicine and medical care, and in society, based on reverence for life and compassion for those suffering from cardiovascular disease.

Based on these viewpoints, the theme for the meeting has been set as “NEXT STAGE: Future of Medicine and Community.” Moreover, rather than the usual exhibition limited to pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers, a special exhibition “Future of Medicine and Community: Future HealthTech for Life” has been planned. More suited to this time of great change for cardiovascular medicine, the exhibition will be open to everyone from a wide range of industries. On the final day of the meeting, we also plan to set up a space inside the exhibition hall for ordinary members of the community to attend public lectures and participate in awareness-raising activities.

Success of the meeting can only be achieved with everyone’s support and cooperation. I look forward to seeing you in Yokohama in March 2021.
