5TH IUPHAR WCP-NP, 2019
IUPHAR is a member of the International Science Council (previously ICSU), and is a voluntary independent non-profit association representing the interests of over 37,000 pharmacologists and about 50 national associations world-wide. The Indian Pharmacological Society is also a member of International Union of Basic and Clinical pharmacology (IUPHAR) and has completed 50 years of successful professional existence.
IUPHAR mission is to improve health through pharmacology education and research. IUPHAR communicates effectively using its websites www.iuphar.org and www.guidetoharmacology.org.
In the recent past IUPHAR Natural Products (NP) has committed itself to develop evidence based medicine framework for advancing natural products drug development through promotion of international academic exchange and cooperation.
For centuries, India is known for traditional systems of medicine and today the country is being one of the major exporters of natural products in the World. India is also known for biodiversity and untapped flora and fauna. Many research organizations both in Public and Private sectors are distributed throughout the country in research and promotion of natural products.
The 5th IUPHAR World Conference on the Pharmacology of Natural Medicine (5th WCP-NP-2019) is being conducted for the first time in association with IPS at ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, Telangana, India from 5th to 7th, December 2019. The theme of conference is natural products for Healthy Ageing: from Molecular Targets to Therapy.
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS FOR NATURAL PRODUCT RESEARCH
Natural products (NPs) and Natural Medicine (NM) represent a major source of chemical diversity for drug discovery and health. Traditional Medicine has a gulf with evidence-based medicine. Can this be resolved – yes? Very recently, eight factors have completely changed NP research.
- High throughput metabolomics linked to NMR allows rapid and extensive analysis of complex mixtures.
- Biosynthesis can now produce single chemicals, or mixtures, from bacteria or yeast, or directly.
- Chemical and plant libraries are available for screening.
- The microbiome is highly dependent on natural products with a synergy which changes both the composition of the microbiome, and of the NPs, which may have affected recent human evolution.
- Consequently, immune-pharmacology is highly dependent on NPs, but this is not fully exploited yet, despite immune-pharmacology being the most active medical area at present.
- Research in Pharmaceuticals, Nutraceuticals, Cosmetics, Food Additives and Food Face similar technical issues, but with different regulatory impact, so food will impact medicine to an increasing effect.
- The recent controversies about medicinal cannabis highlight how critical it is to control the different ingredients, particularly THC and cannabinodiol.
- The Nagoya protocol, which protects biodiversity and traditional medicine, attributes ownership of genetic and NP resources to the nation of origin, and scientists must follow specific guidelines in NP research, or face severe penalties, and some nations have enacted sweeping legislation.
Thus, NP science has major geopolitical constraints, which are already changing the face of research. Getting the balance right in the application of Nagoya is critical for world health and for finding new drugs, equitably. IUPHAR, as an international organisation with the NP sub-committee, has a goal of increasing evidence-based medicine in NP research and been involved in a series of meetings in China, India, Singapore, Brazil, Africa, Europe proposing that the potential revolutions in the field (above: 1-8) be enacted constructively, rather than being blocked by national interests. This revolution is necessary because of the different health care issues between rich and poor (below) and also because of the geographical differences in health care approaches.
The Hyderabad world congress of natural products in 4th- 8th December 2019 will bring all this together and make a major breakthrough in the area.
Prof. Michael Spedding, General Secretary - IUPHAR
Dr. Dinesh Kumar, President – IPS and Councillor - IUPHAR NPS
